Resources for Men's Well-Being
Resources for Men's Well-Being
When I first started coaching, I was intimidated to coach men. I felt like I needed to prove myself or somehow show that I was smart or talented enough to be coaching them. Working with women came much more naturally to me – having always been surrounded by loving groups of women and peers throughout my life. It’s funny to think about now, but I do remember on more than a few occasions a few well-meaning friends or colleagues suggesting that I focus my work solely on women.
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with focusing on one gender or another, I knew in my heart that what I had to offer was not meant only for women. The love, compassion, nurturing, and no b.s. direct approach that I have in my coaching does not depend on your gender. Neither does my mission of waking up as many people as possible to the magic that is within and around them. And while I had to overcome my own limiting beliefs and barriers to recognize just how much I have to offer both men and women, not everyone has been on the same journey as me.
Recently, while in conversation with a client of mine, a leader in the tech world, I realized just how much men have to hold themselves back in today’s society. My client was afraid to show anger because he didn’t know what would happen as a result. With so much fear and prejudice around toxic masculinity, and so many women coming into their own power – often by tearing down the systems (and men) they perceive to have held them back – it’s no wonder that so many men feel safer not expressing themselves fully. Not to mention the lineage of men before them who weren’t allowed to express themselves.
Just as women were so often taught to be the “good girl” men were taught to hold back their emotions (sadness, rage, anger, frustration). Without positive role models for what healthy anger or sadness looks like, there are generations of men who have just held it all in to please those around them.
This topic is far from my area of expertise, but I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by remarkable leaders and coaches who generously shared some powerful resources for men who are looking to safely tap into their own masculinity and authenticity. I’m sharing them here with you all in case they can help you on your journey, or open an important conversation with someone you love.
