How Powerful is Your Story in Shaping Your Identity
Have you ever wondered where the stories we tell ourselves about who we are end, and where the truth of who we really are begins?
We are shaped by our stories. Some would argue that we ARE our stories. We craft narratives about our identity, our past, our aspirations, and even who we present ourselves as each day. These stories shape our self-image, but they aren't necessarily who we truly are. They're simply that: stories.
Let me share a personal example. I'm currently visiting family in Berlin, a place I once called home. I moved here around 25 and spent over a decade building my new-adult life in this adopted city.
I grew into myself – or one version of myself. I was a wildlife conservationist, a fundraiser, a project manager, sometimes a girlfriend, other times a fiancée. I was a cat lover and a friend to the crows. Then I moved to London, and my story evolved. I became a married woman, a person with a garden, a friend to stray cats, and the owner of a British-founded business. All of these are stories. Identities. Some I wore, some I still wear, but none of them fully capture the essence of who I am.
Who I am changes every single day. It's who I'm becoming. It's the story I'm choosing to live. But still, they're just stories and not the true essentials of my unfolding life. The narratives about my fears, past hurts, sadness, or self-imposed limitations are also simply stories, not absolute truths. Equally, the tales of what I love, what makes me laugh, how I spend my time, and who I spend it with are also stories. Not immutable truths.
So, what if the way we talk about ourselves has the power to shape who we really are in the world? What if our stories need updating? What if we need to let go of old identities or outdated values and allow ourselves to embrace this present version of who we are?
What stories would you change?
Who would you choose to become?
With love,
Amanda
