The Path to True Well-Being and Choosing Happiness
Have you ever contemplated what it truly means to be well? I'm not talking about just going through the motions of life but experiencing a deep sense of contentment and fulfillment. It's a journey that often leads us to question our understanding of happiness and explore new perspectives.
When I reflect on what brings me genuine joy and satisfaction in life, I find myself on a constant journey of self-discovery. Sometimes, I believe I've found the key to happiness and fulfillment, only to realize later that it might not be as fulfilling as I initially thought. Goals I once pursued fervently sometimes lose their luster or reveal themselves to be different from what I had imagined.
Allow me to share a personal story. Five years ago, as I was completing my coaching training, I still felt insecure about marketing myself as a coach and asking people to pay for my services. However, my first client signed up and invested $900 USD for three months of coaching. Though it didn't cover all my bills, I was thrilled that someone saw value in what I had to offer. Yet, even with this milestone reached, I still felt insecure. I convinced myself that only once I achieved full certification and became a certified coach would I be considered legitimate. I believed people would naturally flock to me and invest large sums of money in my coaching services. I thought that achieving certification would bring me joy and satisfaction, fulfilling my ultimate goal.
It took months of rigorous training and a final exam before I finally held my coaching certification in my (digital) hand. I felt a sense of pride in my achievement. But, true to form, my focus quickly shifted to the next milestone, never allowing myself to revel in my success or experience a true sense of fulfillment.
Over time, I came to realize that true fulfillment doesn't come solely from achieving specific goals or reaching predetermined targets. It's something that can be experienced by simply choosing to embrace it. This may seem counterintuitive, especially if you believe that happiness is found only after achieving certain milestones or acquiring specific possessions. We tend to think, "Once I achieve x, y, z, then I'll finally be happy. Then I can relax and enjoy everything I've created."
However, the truth is that happiness is not a final destination. It's an ever-present state of mind that exists within each of us, waiting to be chosen over other emotions. It's a choice we make amidst feelings like "wanting," "desire," "scarcity," or "not having enough." This doesn't mean ignoring genuine emotions or embracing toxic positivity. Rather, it means choosing happiness on average, even when it may not be our default state.
So, let's return to my initial question: What does it mean to be well? Do we truly know? Every time I think I've unraveled the secret, I discover even deeper wells of well-being and joy waiting to be explored. The quest for true well-being continues, and it is endlessly fascinating.
Choosing happiness is a decision I make, even when my mind tricks me into believing that true happiness is only attainable after reaching my next major goal. But what if it were genuinely that simple? What if we decided today that we are well, happy, and have everything we want and need? What if we chose contentment?
