What To Do if You Have Too Many Ideas
What To Do if You Have Too Many Ideas
This weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a workshop with none other than Elizabeth Gilbert, the renowned author of "Eat, Pray, Love." Among the many profound insights and sage advice she shared, one particular question from the audience stood out:
"What do you do if you have multiple ideas? How do you know which direction to go in?"
Liz's response was a wake-up call for many of us:
"You're going to have to have a real reckoning with yourself. Are you on record as a person who's capable of finishing something?"
The room fell silent, with some nervous laughter breaking the tension. Liz continued:
"Successfully show that you can finish something, even through the hard, boring part. Don't just run from one sexy idea to another. Completion is an incredible achievement."
Her advice?
Have a board meeting with all of your creative ideas and find out what they want from you. Talk to your projects, the books that want to be written, or the businesses that want to be built, and try to work it out together. Some ideas don't actually want to be made, so find out which ones do - and which ones you want to collaborate on - and bring those to life.
As creatives and entrepreneurs, we often find ourselves overwhelmed by the sheer number of ideas we have. But Liz's words serve as a powerful reminder that the true measure of success lies in our ability to see things through to completion - no matter the outcome. It's not up to you to decide what will work and what won't. It is your job to finish it.
So, take a moment to reflect on your own creative journey and ask yourself: are you on record as someone who can finish what you start? Or do you often crush your dream long before anyone else has the chance to?
