Boost Your Focus and Productivity With the Pomodoro Technique
I can't tell you how many times I've struggled to make progress towards a goal only to have it stifled by overwhelm or not knowing where to begin. And entire day stretches out before me and I know what I want to have by the end of the day, but the big picture just feels too big and despite my best efforts to make headway, progress (or even just getting started) feels impossible. This is when I need to pull in the big guns to move the needle.
The Pomodoro Technique has saved me more times than I can count. Each time the task feels too big, the steps too overwhelming, or the confusion about where to start. I set my handy pomodoro timer for 25 minute increments, turning off all distractions and notifications before I begin, and dive headfirst into the one, singular task at hand. In this way, I make progress, one tiny step at a time.
So what is the Pomodoro Technique?
This time management method divides work into short, timed intervals separated by short breaks. The timed work sprints enable you to focus intensely without burning out. Plus you have mini breaks to look forward to throughout, so you know how long you need to sprint and exactly when you get to take a break to make a coffee or check on that laundry you left running hours ago.
Here’s how to try Pomodoro:
Choose a task to work on and set a timer for 25 minutes. Avoid distractions and work only on that task until the timer rings. Then take a 5 minute break before starting your next 25-minute Pomodoro.
After 4 work sprints, take a longer 15-30 minute break to recharge. Then repeat the process.
The forced timing and regular breaks help boost focus, energy, and motivation. Taking breaks before reaching exhaustion prevents mental fatigue.
Your checklist might look like this:
Example Project - Write 1,000 word blog post
✅ 10:00 - 10:25 (25 mins) - Write out objective and audience for blog post
✅ 10:25 - 10:30 (5 mins) - Break
✅ 10:30 - 10:55 (25 mins) - Write outline for content
✅ 10:55 - 11:00 (5 mins) - Break
✅ 11:00 - 11:25 (25 mins) - Begin first draft of post
✅ 11:25 - 11:30 (5 mins) - Break
✅ 11:30 - 11:55 (25 mins) - Continue to write first draft of post
✅ 11:55 - 12:15 (20 mins) (Longer Break)
Repeat
By the end you have your first draft of your blog post in 4 smaller increments.
