Stuck Before the Big Shift
Stuck Before the Big Shift
There’s always a moment just before big change takes place, where everything feels impossibly stuck. Even the weather, it seems, would agree. Rather than letting the full heat of the sun soak our skin here in London, the sun has remained aloof behind clouds, uncertain if it should rise and shine, or simply slink back to the night sky – waiting for a “better” moment to return.
For anyone who has experienced this feeling of being stuck, and I can guarantee it is almost everyone reading this email, you probably already know how painful it can be. There’s a sense that I “should” be somewhere else by now, that this thing – whatever it is – is just taking too long, that I’m too far behind, or “what’s wrong with me – shouldn’t I have figured this out by now?”
Stuckness can come from many places and often manifests as procrastination (at least in my world.) It shows up when I am trying to figure out a problem or challenge I’ve never faced before or when rather than trying to do something step-by-step I instead look up at the top of the ladder and wish I was already there. It’s the dreaded sense that I don’t have enough time to complete a certain task or that in order to bring it to life it must be perfect. Sometimes I feel stuck because I simply don’t know where to begin and feel overwhelmed trying to find the right point of focus, or when I fear that others have already done this before…but better.
No matter how many tools and techniques I have at my disposal, or how many times I’ve faced a similar situation, I am not immune to that sense of wanting to create a certain outcome and freezing in the process of trying to bring it to life.
So whether you are trying to find a new career path, launch a big project, or even to just get moving on a commitment you made to yourself (or others), know that you are not alone on this particular journey. Take my best advice, that I often forget to follow, and go one step at a time, one day at a time. Stay present with the feeling, acknowledge it, and move through it. And for those days when it feels particularly sticky – set a Pomodoro Timer (my most effective tool to get me from inaction to action.)
Just as the sun will eventually pierce the clouds to glow brightly over London, so will you emerge from this period of stuckness to shine. You have all the inner wisdom and strength you need to see you through this transition to the next chapter.
Go easy on yourself!
