Want to Get Better at Something? Commit to It
Want to Get Better at Something? Commit to It

One of the things I hear most often from clients is that they truly want to improve something in their life, or perhaps they want to get better at a skill (e.g. writing, speaking, etc) but they don’t know how to go about it.
Typically, as humans, our first response to this kind of challenge is to go and find a course or a teacher who can show us how to be better at that thing. I’ll admit I am guilty of it myself. And while this can certainly be a meaningful method for growth, of allowing yourself to learn from the best, or get new ideas, or build up your confidence that it is possible for you to get better at whatever it is you want to get better at, it still doesn’t necessarily allow you the space to get the practice you will need to be better.
It might not be the answer that you want to hear, but the truth is that for most of the skills or capabilities that we want to develop in our lives, we don’t need an expert to show us how. We often just need to SIT DOWN and do the work ourselves.
When I decided that I wanted to improve my writing, I could have hired a writing coach or signed up for a writing seminar, but that still wouldn’t necessarily have helped me to improve my confidence. What does, invariably, help me to improve my confidence is writing. And then, in my case, publishing.
The more I write, the more confident I feel with my voice. The more I publish, the more comfortable I am sharing my perspective. The more I write, the more feedback I get from people around me who have read or listened to what I shared, and got value out of it.
So if you are someone who is truly looking to improve yourself or your skills in one particular area, here are 3 simple steps you can take to make it happen.
1. Commitment: Truly commit to what it is you want to achieve (i.e. “I commit to become a better writer.”)
2. Intention: set an intention for how you want to show up to the activity, and align yourself with why you want to do it (i.e. “I will create the space I need in my life to be able to get better at writing. I will show up with an open mind and see what happens as a result.)
3. Action: Sit down and do the thing. Whatever it is you committed to. I recommend daily practice to keep up the momentum and energy. You will see results in a matter of weeks, possibly even days.
